Is "Restaurant Waiter" really a perfect example of an API? Or are we thinking wrong?

If you watch any video about API on YouTube or ask AI about it, you will find one common example. And that is the restaurant example.
In that example, the customer is the Client, the waiter is the API, the chef is the Server, and the kitchen is the Database. The customer (Client) does not directly place an order with the chef (Server); instead, they tell the waiter (API), and the waiter goes and informs the chef. At first glance, this example seems absolutely perfect.
But think about it for a moment. Doesn't this example make it seem like the waiter is only there to make things more convenient? If you want, you can simply go directly to the chef and place your order, right? Just like in a food court. There, the chef can handle everything by themselves.
Now think about this: how will the client communicate with the server? The client exists in one world, while the server exists in another. If the client wants to send a request to the server, exactly through whom or how will that request be sent? There has to be someone in between who will take the request to the server, and based on that request, the server will also send the response back to the client. This messenger is the API. Without an API, there is no way to establish communication between the client and the server. But in the restaurant example, it is still possible to place an order with the chef without a waiter. So, what would be a perfect example?
Let me share an example of my own. It is about an ordinary citizen communicating with or meeting the Prime Minister of a country. As an ordinary citizen, you cannot simply walk directly to the Prime Minister and start talking to them. You would first have to communicate with their protocol officer or assistant (API) and make your request (Request). The assistant would then inform the Prime Minister (Server) about the matter. The Prime Minister's response would once again be delivered to you by that assistant (Response).
What became clear here?
- Necessity: There is no alternative way to reach the Prime Minister without going through the assistant.
- Security: Anyone cannot simply enter the system and cause harm; the protocol officer acts as the first filter.
In exactly the same way—just as communication between the client and server is impossible without an API, the security of the system's data and logic is also ensured through this API.
